Consumer Protection Laws are seen modified recently in the last phase of the year 2014. Modified consumer laws are being in proposal since from 2013 which got recent approval in the month of December last year. It is the best way to regulate dealers, recyclers and repairers of motor vehicles in New South Whales. It is done by conducting education campaign by inspectors of Fair Trading Motor industry. This education campaign is conducted by 7 teams of inspectors who spent their time on Sydney roads, as a part of the campaign. Motor dealers and Repairers Act 2013 present seen in the application brought a great change in laws compared to previous acts. It took one year to get approval for this act which is in action from December 2014.
Odometer tampering is the most common fraud seen in many parts of NSW which is now regulated by new rules came into existence from last year. It is included in rules that higher penalties are to be thrown on people committing odometer tampering fraud.It is seen that penalty got doubled to 22,000 dollars this time compared to the previous year. Along with this, itbecame mandatory to act according to the customer conditions disclosure. So that it will not affect the consumer’s decision of buying a car or buying at a particular place. These rules include cases of major modifications to be done to a vehicle, hail damage, the value of the vehicle whether got down due to damages and if any suspicions of odometer tampering filed on vehicle etc.

New Auto Trade Practice Laws came into existence added major modifications to license requirements. New rules have transformed the business of license and its requirements completely. Nearly half of reduction is seen in six motor dealer licenses and 16 motor vehicle repair business license types which are reduced to 3 from last year. Motor dealer, motor vehicle repairer and motor vehicle recycler are three license types came into existence today. Most importantly, enforcement rules changed are enabling to take rectification orders as evidence in front of the court. Fair trading was accepted as a great opportunity by Greg Patten, who was the CEO of Motor Traders Association (MTA). An initiative of change in rules was a proposal from association’s code of Ethics. MTA wants to help consumers by building confidence in them.
With the act of change in rules, total 2436 complaints got registered to NSW Fair Trading. Among them, 2384 complaints are about used cars and remaining 52 complaints are regarding used motor vehicles. Along with these complaints, some other complaints got registered about new cars and motor vehicles. It is recorded that 1529 complaints are against new cars and 84 complaints are against new motor vehicles which are integrated together as 1163 complaints. All these records are taken in the year2014-2015. Along with complaints, there are some penalty notices given to 131 offences which are valued to 115,510 dollars, mentioned by Fair Trading. In these recorded offences, 81 offences underwent court prosecutions and 123,435 dollars was the amount of fine ordered by the court for these offences.
